How This One Is Made
Before any banding goes on, the stem is turned with shallow seats cut at intervals along its length. Each band sits down into its own seat rather than being wrapped over a smooth stem, which is what keeps the rungs from creeping when the piece is handled.
The bands go on from the thick end down. Spacing is set by eye and tightens as the stem narrows, so the ladder appears to run at an even rhythm even though the gaps are actually closing. Measuring it out evenly would make it look wrong.
Brass and amber alternate, each one burnished after it is seated. The dark stem underneath is finished first and shows only as the gaps between rungs, which is what gives the piece its contrast from across a room.
